Photo Resolution Explained: How Many Megapixels Do You Need for High-Quality Prints?

When ordering photo prints, resolution matters just as much as paper choice and printing technology. Understanding how megapixels, pixel dimensions and DPI (dots per inch) work together helps ensure your photographs are printed at the highest possible quality for their size.

Below, we explain the recommended resolutions for common print sizes, what DPI really means, and how our advanced printing processes allow us to produce outstanding results — even from challenging files.

Understanding Resolution: Pixels, Megapixels and DPI

Pixel dimensions refer to the width and height of an image measured in pixels (for example, 3000 × 2000 pixels).

Megapixels (MP) describe the total number of pixels in an image (width × height).

DPI (dots per inch) determines how densely those pixels are printed on paper.

Higher DPI means more detail per inch, resulting in sharper, smoother prints — especially noticeable at close viewing distances.

Our Quality Benchmarks

240 dpi – Good enough for most standard photographic prints

300 dpi – Premium print quality, excellent sharpness without pushing files to extremes

600 dpi minimum – Ultra-premium prints with exceptional detail and smooth tonal transitions

Up to 1440 dpi – Maximum output capability of our printing processes

Recommended Resolution for Common Print Sizes

Below are recommended pixel dimensions and megapixels for different print sizes at 240 dpi, 300 dpi, and 600 dpi.

4 × 6 inches

240 dpi: 960 × 1440 px (≈ 1.4 MP)

300 dpi: 1200 × 1800 px (≈ 2.2 MP)

600 dpi: 2400 × 3600 px (≈ 8.6 MP)

Ideal for small prints, snapshots and ID-style photos. Even modest smartphone images perform well at this size.

5 × 7 inches

240 dpi: 1200 × 1680 px (≈ 2.0 MP)

300 dpi: 1500 × 2100 px (≈ 3.1 MP)

600 dpi: 3000 × 4200 px (≈ 12.6 MP)

A popular size for portraits and gifts, benefiting from higher DPI for facial detail.

6 × 8 inches

240 dpi: 1440 × 1920 px (≈ 2.8 MP)

300 dpi: 1800 × 2400 px (≈ 4.3 MP)

600 dpi: 3600 × 4800 px (≈ 17.3 MP)

Works well for lifestyle photography and detailed colour images.

8 × 10 inches

240 dpi: 1920 × 2400 px (≈ 4.6 MP)

300 dpi: 2400 × 3000 px (≈ 7.2 MP)

600 dpi: 4800 × 6000 px (≈ 28.8 MP)

A classic print size where resolution becomes more noticeable, especially at close viewing distances.

8 × 12 inches

240 dpi: 1920 × 2880 px (≈ 5.5 MP)

300 dpi: 2400 × 3600 px (≈ 8.6 MP)

600 dpi: 4800 × 7200 px (≈ 34.6 MP)

Ideal for landscapes and panoramic-style compositions.

16.5 × 12 inches

240 dpi: 3960 × 2880 px (≈ 11.4 MP)

300 dpi: 4950 × 3600 px (≈ 17.8 MP)

600 dpi: 9900 × 7200 px (≈ 71.3 MP)

A large-format print where premium and ultra-premium resolutions truly shine.

13 × 19 inches

240 dpi: 3120 × 4560 px (≈ 14.2 MP)

300 dpi: 3900 × 5700 px (≈ 22.2 MP)

600 dpi: 7800 × 11400 px (≈ 88.9 MP)

Perfect for exhibition prints, fine art photography and professional display.

What Does Printing at 1440 DPI Mean?

While image files are measured in pixels, printers work in dots per inch. Our professional printing systems can output up to 1440 dpi, which refers to how finely ink droplets are placed on the paper.

This does not mean your photo needs to be 1440 dpi. Instead:

The printer uses advanced dithering and micro-dot placement

Multiple ink droplets are used to render a single image pixel

Fine tonal transitions, smooth gradients and sharp edges are achieved

When supplied with a high-quality image (especially at 300–600 dpi), our printing technology fully exploits this capability to create prints that appear exceptionally detailed, smooth and natural.

How to Use Resolution to Get the Best Results

For standard prints, 240 dpi is perfectly acceptable and produces excellent results

For premium prints, 300 dpi is ideal and widely considered professional quality

For ultra-premium and fine art prints, aim for at least 600 dpi at print size

Avoid unnecessary upscaling — quality matters more than raw numbers

If your image does not meet the ideal resolution, our processing workflow can optimise it for the best possible outcome without introducing artefacts.

Final Thoughts

Resolution plays a crucial role in print quality, but it is only one part of the equation. Combined with professional paper selection, colour management and high-end printing processes capable of up to 1440 dpi output, even demanding images can be transformed into spectacular prints.
